It’s been two years since Mackenzie Phillips came out on Oprah and in her book High On Arrival with the story of sexual abuse from her father. The admission made a huge impact on other survivors out there as finally someone has spoken out about one of the last taboos. The interviews were some of the first posts when Coming Out Of The Dark started in fall 2009 as I found her bravery inspiring. http://comingoutofdark.com/addiction/mackenziephillips/
When the paperback version came out earlier this year, I watched some of the new interviews about the added chapter. The Today Show
Around this time through my work, I found out that Mackenzie was in a new film that was coming to Toronto. Through a crazy twist of fate, not only was Mackenzie coming to town for the festival, but I would be her publicist. Unlike so many lesser known talent, Mackenzie didn’t have a team of “people” I had to go through for every little thing, I was able to call her directly. From the moment I first picked up the phone, we talked like we had known each other for years.
I set up a bunch of interviews on the top tv shows in Canada – Canada AM, Marilyn Denis and Entertainment Tonight Canada. I met her upon her arrival in Toronto and again from the first moment she was an instant friend. THIS WOMAN HAS NO SECRETS! And I could tell that must be such a freeing feeling! During my time with her we connected on a personal level and I felt honoured to have been in the room for the interview on Marilyn Denis. Of all the interviews I’d seen with her, this one was very special and empowering. It was a special week and I was overwhelmed with emotion when Mackenzie thanked me during her acceptance speech for an Honourary Actress Award she was presented. True to her word we have stayed in contact and I look forward to the day we meet again.
